After Grossing nearly $500,000 in Preorders and Earning the Moniker “Frontrunner for Game of the Year,” Feudum gets a Solo Player Expansion with a Dash of Coop

The world of Feudum has exploded for University of Missouri Professor Mark Swanson turned game designer! After funding on the first day back in November 2016, the base game Feudum has reached more than $425,000 in preorders, and shows no sign of slowing down. Without stopping for breath, Odd Bird Games has partnered with developers J.R. Honeycutt and Brian Neff of Waitress Games, and will launch a solo variant expansion called, Feudum: The Queen’s Army on July 27 on Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/464687699/1704639504?token=6fdeff53.

Dubbed, “Very difficult to beat,” by Honeycutt, the game allows you (and others) to play against an A.I. player! Says Honeycutt, “The Queen, the all-powerful, indefatigable Queen, is on a rampage across your little world and there’s nothing you can do about it. Well, almost nothing.”

Games offering a solo mode have soared in popularity in recent years—especially ones that allow for multiple players to challenge the A.I.! And, in the case of the Queen’s Army, this A.I. cleverly reacts to game conditions and keeps everyone guessing with her unpredictable maneuvering!

“The game is incredibly in-depth and challenging, said Brian Neff. “With extra difficulty settings, you can even tune your own experience! I’ll be adding it to my collection, even with close to two dozen games under my belt!”

At the heart of the game is an “automa” deck, a term coined by Morten Monrad Pedersen, who defines automa play as an A.I opponent who can win, lose and interact with a player enough to feel like a real opponent.

The base game Feudum features the strategic complexities found in games such as Terra Mystica, Brass, Caylus, Dominant Species, Vinhos, The Gallerist, and Madeira but sets itself apart with its meticulously-drawn illustrations, interesting decisions and a fully-functioning economic ecosystem. This deep immersive world impressed game reviewer James Hudson enough to call the game his “Frontrunner for Game of the Year.”

“There’s not one right way to play it,” said Swanson. “Uniquely powered characters and multiple paths to victory make for an ever-changing, open-world experience. You have to be flexible—ready to adapt.” The solo variant features the same action programming, area influence and hand management as the base game, but with an interesting twist: The Queen wants to annihilate your band of rebels!

The solo variant takes 80 minutes to play and will include rulebooks in German, French and English.
